Aarey Milk Colony – Milk your travel experiences

Today my nephews are all out abroad and have settled in their respective life. My children are also a part of the student community who have very little time to relax now and all the memories of the past remain a pleasant dream for us now.

As Monica, my wife and I drove down through the Aarey Milk Colony; both of us were taken to a time some 10 years ago when we had come to this exact spot with my sister in law and her kids. We reached home and took out our video cassettes. Yes those were the days of the video cassette. There weren’t any DVD camcorders. So we took them out and watched what we had recorded some years back when all of us had gone to the Aarey Milk Colony.

The cassette started. There was my son a small kid then licking his lollypop. We were all in the Aarey Milk Colony in Goregaon in Mumbai. With its beautiful gardens, and the loveliest of surroundings, this certainly is a picnic spot for all of us in those days. Famous as the favourite locale of many film directors, the Aarey Milk Colony was established in the year 1949. It has a beautiful lake, milk plants and a great observation pavilion too. There are around 16,000 cattle which are reared here and the entire area of around 1287 hectares of land has around 32 farms for cattle.

Aarey Milk Colony (established in 1949) is situated in Goregaon East, a suburb of Mumbai. It has gardens, a nursery, lakes, an observation pavilion, picnic facilities, and milk plants. Around 16,000 cattle are here and reared on this huge expanse of around 1287 hectares of area. There are around 32 farms for the cattle.

I saw the Aarey Garden Restaurant and I smiled thinking how my nephew and niece were fighting for space there and wanted to eat everything that the hotel offered. Then we had gone to Chota Kashmir where there was a lake and is there still and there we had had fun in the boat ride that we had. There was something lovely about this small lake and this place was thus named after the most beautiful locale in India – Kashmir. Chota means small in Hindi so it was like little Kashmir. Just like how in Kashmir we go boating on the Dal Lake similarly this lake was meant to give us that feeling. There was lot of fun and laughter then when the kids were around. Today as Monica and I sat on the banks of the lake looking at all the families trying to give their best to the kids we reminisced our past days with lot of fond memories.

The Aarey milk colony was normally crossed when people wanted to go to any place on the Western Express Highway from the other end – The Eastern Express Highway. So we normally used to travel from Thane to Malad that is from our house to my sister in law’s via the Aarey Milk Colony. This picturesque zone is protected from pollution and traffic and we had to pay a fee to use the road. This place has one of the best milk colonies in the

whole world. IT is not only a milk colony but also a great spot for shooting movies. Most of the Indian movies are shot in this part of Mumbai as it provides the perfect scenic beauty that is needed in a movie. The garden in the Aarey Milk colony spreads over 4000 acres of land and is the ideal place for tourism. The observation pavilion on the hill is a place where we could go and get enchanted by the landscape of the region.

This pavilion is in the entrance to the Aarey Milk Colony. I remember as children my nephew and niece had come here on a school excursion and understood how milk is packed and sent to other places.

A great place for picnic and get-togethers, the Aarey milk colony is the place where invariably everyone comes for a small picnic. The place has the best gardens, a great nursery and a beautiful lake which attracts all those people who want a quick getaway spot.

This is also the place where there are a lot of television studios. Most of the television programmes are shot here and I always wanted to fulfill my daughter’s wish of seeing a film being shot. But in those days, it was a big thing unlike today when we do get a chance to see the shooting of a movie.

The Aarey milk colony is also a zone where there is a variety of birds. The Chota Kashmir area has a beautiful lake with the best birds coming here and giving beauty to the place. You have the parrot, then the sunbird, cuckoo and many other small birds which twitter around and make this place worth visiting. This place is very famous in Mumbai as this is perhaps the only place where you won’t find pollution and noise.
