While in Adilabad there are a good many places that you can visit.
Go to the Kala Ashram which is a great discovery of Ravindra Sharma. This is a haven for all kinds of arts, science, technology and traditional beliefs. Here tourists find books which are relevant to the rural society. You could also participate in the various workshops and other performances of the art form called Bhiksha Vruttis. This is organized in this ashram and is given lot of encouragement by all.
When I went here, I had a memorable time in this calm region of the past. My family was quite happy with the small vacation we had here and the fact that the memories still remain etched in my mind shows the influence this place had on me.
We went to the Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary here which was discovered in the year 1964, which is greatly known for its variety of flora and fauna. Dense forests are found around the sanctuary and the main vegetation here is teak, bamboo, and other shrubs and herbs. There are many wildlife also which also live here. These include the sloth bear, the sambar, cheetal, Nilgai, Indian bison, barking deer, panther, tiger etc. Besides this you could also find the python, monitor lizards, deer reptiles, star tortoise and many other reptiles.
The avifauna is not left behind. Varieties of birds like the eagles, quails, partridge, owls, mynahs, kingfishers and the peacock are found here. People like to come to the sanctuary on in the winter seasons.
Then we went to the Kuntala Waterfalls. This is located in the centre of the Sahyadri Mountains. The Neredikonda village in Adilabad is very close to this place. This is incidentally the highest waterfall in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Legend has it that the Kuntala Waterfall has been named after Shakuntala the wife of King Dushyanta. They are said to have fallen in love at this place. It is also believed here that Shakuntala used to take bath in this waterfall. From here we went to a temple which had the presiding deity as the Someshwar Swami. During Mahashivratri, the temple is decorated well and people revel in religious celebrations.
Then from here we went to the Pochera Waterfalls which is again a little away from Adilabad. Dense forests surround this waterfall and here too you would find a great variety of flora and fauna. This is the place where the river Godavari joins the water and falls from a height of 20 m. It was a memorable sight to see this form of the River Godavari.
Then there is the Basar Saraswati Temple we visited which is located in Basar that lies at the confluence of the Mangira and the river Godavari. The Gnana Saraswati is the presiding deity here and she is revered as the Goddess of Knowledge. It is a very old temple and belongs to the shrines that were dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. Legend says that this is the temple where Ved Vyas did a penance. It is believed that Ved Vyas used to make idols of Goddess, Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati. It is said that the Chalukya kinds built this temple structure. Panchami and Navatri festival are important functions here that are visited by all tourists. This temple is also popular as the venue of the Akshara Gnana ritual where the child’s first education is celebrated, revered and blessings elders are seek.
Then we went to the Jainath temple. This is situated in the village of the same name. This is around 21m from Adilabad. With a lovely Prakrit stone with more than 20 slokas inscribed on them, the stones are a living proof of the past.
There are many more places to visit here in Adilabad the beautiful Andhra Pradesh land.
