Dagdusheth Ganapati temple of Pune is well known across the country, also famous as Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple called by many devotees. It is one of the oldest temples founded in the year 1893 built by the famous Dagdusheth Halwai (sweet maker) and is located in the heart of the city, Shaniwarwada (Empire of the Peshwas in Pune). The myth goes like this, Dagdusheth’s son was lost in Plague which resulted the state of depression in the mind of his wife. To overcome her from such trauma, he was asked by his Guru to make Lord Ganesha’s and Shree Datta Maharja’s idol. It was believed that the making of idols will definitely bring out his wife from the state of depression. The Dagdusheth temple is visited by thousands of devotes throughout the year in large number from all over the country.

Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak was his one of the good friends who was associated in the making of Lord Ganesha’s idol. He was the person who introduced the ides of Sarvajanik Mahotsava in the late 1800s. The main aim to introduce this idea was to bring all people together to show unity among the Brithshers. The simple and sober construction of the temple catch glimpse of the devotees from outside. The beautiful architecture done inside and outside is worth to see and hence people from all over the country often visit this temple. The entrance of the temple is huge that allows many devotees walk in through comfortably.

The idol of the Dagdusheth Ganpati is embellished with precious gold jewellery offered by devotes as the token of affection and love. The idol of “Ganpati Bappa” has gold ears which is decorated almost 8 kgs of gold.  The idol of Dagdusheth is considered as the richest in the city of Pune. The idol is complete beauty with 4 feet wide and 7.5 feet tall. Daily Abhishek, Pooja and Ganesh Aarti are trust and by the people to achieved blessings from Bappa. The lighting and decoration of the temple is marvelous.

As we know Bappa is going to come home in two days, there is large arrangements been done, as devotees from all over the country visit this temple during the Ganesh festivals. During this days, there are various activities are arranged such as Atharvasheersh recitation, singing concerts, bhajans and many more organized by the trustees.

The trust of Dagdusheth Ganpati Halwai Temple is one of the richest trustees carried out with philanthropic work that are recived from the donations. This trust also operates “Old Age Home” known as Pitasheree located in Kondawa wada of Pune city. This home was constructed in the year May 2003 by investing sum amount of 1.5 crore INR. At the same place they also provide education and housing for destitute children. Besides these the trust operates all medical help for the poor people located in the tribal belts of the Pune District.
