Fashion Street – For All those who love to shop
My daughter is a staunch shopaholic. Tell her at any time of the day that you are going to shop and she would accompany you. I, for one, hate shopping, but being a mother I am forced to accompany my daughter whenever she has to shop. And Fashion Street is a place, where she loves to go shopping.
This area opposite Azad Maidan in the southern part of Mumbai is the place to go if you want to buy attractive clothes of the current style. The rates are very reasonable and it is famous for all kinds of readymade clothes.
Open from 11 in the morning to 8 in the evening, this place is a great haven for all shoppers. It is ideal to go here between 12 noon to 4 in the evening. Crowd is less at this time and the Sundays are preferably avoidable as they tend to be full.
All college students come here and they wait for the class to get over and rush over to this place to get into those trendy clothes. The place is situated adjacent to the Cross Maidan in Mumbai and is opposite the Azad Maidan. It is a market where there is a lot of export clothing found. All the surplus export garments are shunted to this place. There are around 100 shops here and the fact that you get very chip clothes here adds to the attraction. There are a lot of shops huddled up on the Mahatma Gandhi Road. These dresses if sold in shops would cost double but at Fashion Street are available for very cheap rates as they are priced as per the overhead maintenance. They are a major attraction for the college students as they come here and get all the clothes that suit their fashion. They come here and have great fun haggling with the rates. That is one thing that Fashion Street is famous for. A seasoned shopper here would haggle with half the price that is quoted to them. Invariably there are a lot of reject material in these clothes, but these are rejected for small reasons like a missing button or some other small problem. But most of the clothes are normally quite good and of good quality too. It is the dream place for anyone who wants to buy clothes in plenty and at a reduced cost. The shopping lovers get dresses from traditional attire to modern day dressing styles.
So while we are at this place, my daughter got some shirts and tee shirts. She loved the cotton clothing that she was getting. I looked on at the Bombay Gymkhana which was situated just opposite and allowed my daughter to binge on whatever she wanted. Mumbai is a hub of readymade garments being exported and Fashion Street caters to Mumbai’s shopping desires.
My daughter got a couple of track pants too. Capris and shirts were next in line. She had her friend along who bought some lovely nightwear for herself. I got some toddler’s clothes for my friends’ grandchild. My son bought himself a cap. Then there were varieties of earrings which my daughter got. Shoes and kolhapuris were in great variety here. The shoes were of the latest fashion and were priced very high. I was there to bargain. One thing I like about this place is the fact that you can exchange if you find something wrong with the dress.
The fact that these are export material makes them of good quality and of the best variety too. Stylish, elegant and certainly a must buy for all college children and also those who want to slip into something casual.
Tourists like to come here and buy clothes that suit their style, taste and requirement.
The shopkeepers invariably charge a lot when the foreign tourists arrive, but I was a local so I knew I had to ask for half the price that he told me. I did that and we got a good haul. Then we got some bags to be given as gifts for Diwali and some jewellery items too. Kid’s toys were in plenty and I picked up some to give to the children in my area.
My daughter was stunned to see my shameless bargaining. I didn’t have any hassle. There are even people from Bollywood who come here and get their stuff. They bargain too so what was wrong in our bargaining. The main mantra of this place is to haggle and haggle and haggle. Any person coming here would surely be happy that he got a good buy.
As we walked back to the VT station or the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and crossed the Flora Fountain and the VSNL tower I realized that shopping was fun after all!!!
My daughter’s friend had to go the other way so she crossed the Parsi Tower of Silence and went to the Churchgate station.
We had a good time at Fashion Street.
