This was the beginning of a brand new chapter in the world history and provided another edition to Indian historical tales. There was a lasting relation between Europe and India. The Malabar Coast was rich and wealthy and attracted foreigners from all over. So Indian coasts began to see the likes of the Phoenicians, the Arabs, the Portuguese, the Romans, the English and the Dutch and the Malabar Coast received all of them with rich wealth and local warmth. Kappad beach is one such historical place which has seen such landings and has been witness to a past that is unbeatable.

In those days Kozhikode was a very important centre of trade in the Malabar region and was ruled by the Zamorins who were very powerful people and were pretty shrewd too in their dealings. The Portuguese were welcome in Kozhikode but were really not encouraged and were not given much attention for a long time by the Zamorins. Gradually the Portuguese shifted their settlement to Kollam from Kochi. Today there is only a small stone monument that is found at the Kappad beach which speaks of the historical importance of this place. There is a temple here that is said to be more than 800 years old.

With such thoughts laden in my mind, I visited the Kappad beach and found this small fascinating sea faring region a tiny heaven in Indian travels. A must see for any enthusiastic tourists it is the sheer simplicity of the place that captures your heart. The best way to reach Kappad is to take the backwaters. Totally unspoilt and absolutely picturesque the Kappad beach is one virgin Kerala beauty that no one would want to miss.
