Lingaraj Temple, The King Of Lingas
The great Lingaraj Temple of Bhubaneshwar was built in the 11th century by Jajati Keshari, this is a beautiful temple
dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the main significance of the temple is that the lingam here is self-originated. This temple is one of the largest and oldest temples of Bhubaneswar. The term Lingraj means king of Lingas, wherein the phallic forms of Lord Shiva are in the form of these lingas. The location of this temple is just two kilometres to the southern part of the city and is to the southern side of Bindu Sagar Lake.
Lingaraj Temple was primitively known as Brahma Purana, a Hindu scripture. There are several parts of the temple are those which belong to the 6th century. The architectural style of the temple belongs to the Kalinga style. In the architectural exhibition you can have a look at the aesthetic sculptures. The erection of the temple is done with red stone which is darker shade. The entrance to this beautiful temple is through Lion Gate which is flanked by lions on both sides crushing elephants beneath their legs; this is called as Simha Dwara. The view of the temple is larger than actually it is this is because of the perpendicular deep cuts on the spire.
As it as such structure its looks more larger than actually it is, the temple is alienated into four different sections the
Yajna Shala, the Garbh Griha, Natya Shala and the Bhoga Mandap respectively in the Garbh Griha there is a Swayambhu lingam of Lord Shiva and this is worshipped as both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Once you enter from the main gateway you will see
trident the Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The great lingam is bathed everyday with milk, bhang and water.
Lingaraj shrine portrays the affluent inheritance of Indian traditions and ethnicity. The massive shrine draws thousands of followers and pilgrims to its entrance way each year. The saintly elation offered by the holy place is significance sensation for once.
