Feel free in the fort of Nahargarh which is another lovely fantasy locale which every Indian must experience. Not only is this fort majestic but also is situated along with Jaigarh fort and Amber Fort, and this once formed a major defence ring in the city. This fort was initially named Sudarshangarh but then it was called Nahargarh which means the abode of tigers. It is believed that Nahar here denotes Nahar Singh Bhomia whose spirit it is told to be haunting this portion of the fort in Rajasthan. Apparently he obstructed the construction of this fort and his spirit was pacified only when a temple was built in his memory within the fort and it thus became to be known as Nahargarh in his memory.
Constructed in the year 1734, it was Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who founded the city and this was a fort that was built mainly as a place to relax on the top of the cliff which lies above the city. There were walls that surrounded the entire fort and the hills formed a perfect background here with the best kind of fortifications, that linked this fort to the other forts like Jaigarh etc. Jaigarh lay above the city of Amber. The fort never was attacked during the time of history but it was witness to some of the best events in history. The treaties that were signed with the Maratha forces that fought in Jaipur in the 18th century and the other revolutions like the Indian Mutiny of 1857 etc are some of the notable incidents that happened here historically. It is said that during this mutiny the Britishers and the Europeans living here in this area were shifted to the Nahargarh fort to be protected by the Jaipur king.
The fort then got bigger when there were extension plans in the year 1868. This was the time when Sawai jai Singh II ruled the city. The fort was then a major favourite of the rulers and they loved to come here, and relax in the surroundings of the fort. There was something majestic and magical about the entire place and it was only the constant patronage of the rulers that the fort saw a lot of people preferring to consider it as a major tourist spot in this part of the country.
It I said that when the fort underwent a lot of extension programme in the years 188 3 to 1892 there were a range of palaces built by Sawai Madho Singh at Nahargarh and the cost went up to nearly three and a half lakh rupees . Sawai Madho Singh apparently built the Madhavendra Bhawan and there were suites which were especially for the Jaipur queens. Built with the great style and exquisite work, there was also a suite only for the king. The rooms within had corridors connecting them and the lovely and beautiful frescoes here are still a kind of art to reckon with. Nahargarh was also a great ground for hunting for the Maharajahs.
The fort was used by the State Government of Jaipur till the year 1944 for official use. The fort came to be a great place to be in during the time the Indian Movie Rang De Basanti was shot.
The fort as such was magnificent and the true charm lies in the way it has been built and the way it has been captivating and lovely in its structure. The ladies of the Maharajahs and the kings used to consider it as a great retreat and there was the Zenana deorhi which was very gracefully and tastefully designed. It was constructed such that the women used to get enticed. Madhavendra Bhawan spread over the fourth courtyard and was mainly designed such that it looked resplendent from all sides. There were around 12 quarters here all majestically constructed. There were facilities in all the quarters. The quarters were all linked with the kitchen and there wee spacious corridors and also a fire place which showed a lot of organization.
The Nahargarh fort surely showed a lot of Rajputana art and the luxurious lifestyles of the Rajahs and the maharajahs of India of the past.
When we went to the fort, we also made it a point to visit the Man Sagar Lake and the areas surrounding the fort. The beautiful view of the Man Sagar would never disappoint the tourists coming here for a travel luxury.

With the nearest railhead and airport being Jaipur, the Nahargarh fort is certainly a must see in Rajasthan tours.
With the most beautiful similarities to the “Char Bagh” or the Mughal garden the Nahargarh fort is a perfect place to explore the region of Ranthambore in this part of India.
