Nine Navratri Colors – Calling nine days with nine colors
“I think it is blue Mom, “said my daughter reading out the message from her cell. She had got a message from her friend detailing about the nine Navratri colors. It is very common in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra to wear a particular colour on a particular day of nine navratri . This not only brings in a sense of discipline but also shows a lot of unity in diversity. Besides the explanation for each day with the color rein orces the need for the women to follow this pattern. There is no dress code for this. It is all a matter of respect and reverence that ultimately matters.
I for one make it a point to wear a sari on all the nine days of navratri. Just like how people keep a fast, I observe a discipline of wearing only a sari on these days. So if it is that I have to follow a particular color pattern then that gives me more incentive to wear the sari and flaunt the color.
What are Navratri colors for?
Very rarely are the times when we actually take time off to do something together in today’s fast life. Earlier the population was less, and people had more time for each other. Community festivals and social gatherings were very common and people knew exactly how to enjoy themselves today with the fast paced world we are slowly getting into memory erosion and forget to follow certain discipline and practices. Navratri colors are a way of re in forcing values amongst all of us and each color signifies each day with a different meaning. It is believed that if we worship the Goddess of power during Navratri then we would get the kind of victory she got over evil.
