Known as the “Satpura ki Rani” or the Queen of Satpura this is a great land located at a height of around 1000m in the valley of the Satpura Range in the district of Hoshangabad. With this being the highest point in the central part of India, this is the ideal locale tube in in this part of the world.

This was the earlier kingdom of the Gond tribe and the King Bhawut Singh used to rule here. Before it got annexed to the British Expire this was the capital of the tribal dynasty. Captain James Forsyth introduced this area to the western world in the year 1857 and it was then the hill station and also the sanatorium for all the British troops in the Central Indian Provinces. Pachmarhi was also a great destination for everyone in those days and had the best varieties of plants. UNESCO marked this as a Biosphere Reserves and added to its list of great places.

Though the town is not very large most of its area is under the Pachmarhi Cantonment Board. It served the Indian Army then and the population today, is around 10,000 and consists of those connected to the Indian Army installations in this part of the world.

The civilian portion of Pachmarhi is actually very small and it has some hotels, movie halls and bazaars. There is a club and also a golf course for the military personnel to be used. There is an airstrip which lies near the Dhoopgarh region which is covered with a lot of grass and is not really used much. In fact it is said that this region has a lot of tigers. Many panthers also have been sighted here and these are found on the edges of the Pachmarhi Cantonment.

Places to see here are many and JataShankar is a place which people normally visit in this part of Pachmarhi. It is named thus after the mythological belief that Lord Shiva actually got his matted lock shaded here. This place lies inside a cave and it is believed that Lord Shiva wanted to hide here as the demon Bhasmasur went after him to kill him. There are around 108 Shivlinga formed here naturally inside the cave. Water openings in the cave leave everyone dumbfounded, and no one actually knows where the water comes from. The caves are filled with the sound of the birds chirping. There is a Shivlinga inside the cave. Pilgrims from across the country come to visit this shivling and the festival of Shivratri sees a lot of activity in this part of the caves. The unknown water origin is called the Gupt Ganga. Many visitors come here every year and the low temperature in the cave makes it even more intriguing. The upper part of the cave has a platform where there are idols of Lord Shankar and Goddess Parvati.

Pandav Caves are another location here which have been constructed sometime in the 6th to the 7th century. The saints say that the Pandavas have spent their exile period here, and in fact Arjuna dressed as a eunuch and taught music to Nagpati. He is also said to have got married to the daughter of Nagraj Vasu. He used to live in Nagdwari which is around 15 km from Pachmarhi. There is a Nagpanchami Mela which is held every year here. The caves today are under the survey of the Archaeological Survey of India. There are the caves for each pandava prince. Each cave is worth visiting. Also visit the caves of Draupadi here.

Then there is Hindi Kosh which is a lovely area to be in here. This is a 300 feet deep ravine shaped like a V and is created by two big hills. The British officer handi committed suicide here by jumping into this deep ravine.

Then visit the point from where Captain Forsyth actually viewed the lovely magnificence of the entire region in the year 1857. This is called Forsyth Point. This is the place where Smt. Indira Gandhi visited in the year 1964. This was then named the Priyadarshini Point. This is a place from where you can have a great view of the entire region of Pachmarhi.
