Ever wanted to laze around in a garden of paradise? Then visit Poovar in the pristine surroundings of the state of Kerala in India. This small fishing island off the coastal shores of Kerala on the southern end of the district of Thiruvananthapuram is surrounded by beautiful beach scenery with the backwaters here lending total beauty to the eye. With an estuary linking it to the sea during the time of high tide, the Vizhinjam harbour is very near this small haven. It is an amalgamation of lakes, canals, lagoons, estuaries, deltas. There is a criss cross network of around 44 rivers joining the Arabian Sea, and the entire Poovar region is a paradise in itself. Situated around 38 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Poovar is reached by boat from this city. Having been a great trading centre in the past, the place has a lot of history of trading of sandalwood, spices and ivory. Legend has it that King’s Solomon’s ships landed in the Ophir port. There is also another legend about how Maharaja Marthanda Varma hid here from his enemies and how Moosa Merchant helped him to hide. The name Poovar in fact was believed to have been coined by this Maharaja who saw the red kovala flowers floating in the River Neyyar. He described the pu or the flower as covering the Ar or the river hence giving the name Poovar.

This coastal area is known very well for its backwaters so when I went there last time, I didn’t hesitate to go Poovar yet again.  I was quite excited and eager to visit this land which I used to visit when I was young. There is something about this place which takes you to a land beyond imagination. The River Neyyar separates the Poovar beach and the Arabian Sea. So the place is only accessible by boat. Poovar fishing village is today a great hub of olden form of martial art.

From the Poovar beach, we went to the Kovalam beach which is around 18 km from here. Stretching around an area of around 17 km this place is divided into three beaches which are the Hawah Beach, the Light house beach and the Samudra Beach.
