The auspicious Shravan month, being the fifth and the most significant month of the Hindu’s. At the time of this month the star Shravan is ruling the sky and so it is known as Shravan. You can also call this month as the month of festivals as you can enjoy majority of festivals this month, here in Shravan each day as its own significance. There is also attached a small legend behind in the Shravan month, the ‘Samudra Manthan’, that took place was in the month of Shravan, and during this time there were fourteen types of poisons and rubies that emerged from the manthan, and this was swallowed by Lord Shiva and he stored it in his throat, and this was the time when he was named as Neelkanth. Seeing this all other gods that were preset their started offering water of Ganga to the Lord to dilute the effect of poison, and this is the reason that Shravani Somwar is observed, where Lord Shiva is workshipped by offering Ganga water.

Shravan Month is celebrated not only in Maharashtra but also in various parts of India like Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In the northern parts of the state Shravan month 2011 starts on 16th July and ends on 13th August. While in the rest of the parts like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and Karnataka it starts on 31st July and marks its end on 29th August. In the month of Shravan, there is Shravan fasting done by many people on different days on the month, the main and the firs pooja starts with the pooja of Lord Shiva with Gangajal and bilva leaves. On Tuesday, Mangala Gauri pooja is performed. On Wednesday there is pooja of Budha, then on Thursday there is Brihaspati Puja. Following on Friday is the pooja of Goddess Laxmi, on Saturday Lord Maruti is worshipped and on lastly on Sunday is the Aditya pooja.

The Shravan month is of great significance, it bring with it the festivity and glory in the air, the festivals that comes in Shravan has a huge list but some of the most important are Nag Panchami, Kalky-avatara, Hindola or Swinging, Putradaikadashi, Shravani Poornima, Narali Poornima, Pavitraropana, Vara Lakshmi Vrata, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Pavitra Ekadashi. These festivals are celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm in many parts of India.
