Cape Comorin was one of the most important centres of trade in the past and today is known as Kanyakumari and is the best place to go to on an Indian tour due to its sheer natural beauty and lovely ambience. The southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent, Kanyakumari is a land of pleasures with Nagercoil as its major city and with the city of Thiruvanthapuram as its nearest airport , the Kanyakumari station as the nearest rail head.

Accessible from all cities in India, Kanyakumari has the beautiful locale of Thirparappu which is famous for its waterfalls and is located in the district of Kanyakumari here in the southern part of India. Tourists coming to Kanyakumari make it a point to visit these beautiful falls and get enthralled by the sheer picturesque nature of the surroundings here. People normally come here to Thiruparappu on their pilgrimage to visit the twelve temples of Tamil Nadu.

Thirparappu WaterfallsIt is the River Kodayar which gives water to the Thirparappu Waterfalls, and the entire region is a favourite of all tourists who come here to this beautiful locale in Tamil Nadu. We planned a trip here last month and were quite excited as we were meeting after a long time. So me and my friends reached Thiruvananthapuram by train and planned our trip to Thirparappu. It is around 55 km from Thiruvanthapuram and is around a half hour drive. We reached a rest house and had our lunch here . then we walked around the p lace seeping in the beauty and the ambience and then went towareds the waterfalls.

River KodayarThe sheer beauty and the flow of the falls enthralled us and as the falls speed the water sprays around we were really enchanted by the absolule beauty that Mother Nature gives when she is in full bloom. There was a swimming pool near the Falls which we went to and we are actually impressed with the way it was maintained so well. This was mainly for the children to play in and it was amusing to see the kids having lot of fun in the spray of the waterfalls.  It was peak time as everyone here had come on a holiday. The vacations were on, and the crowd had really decided perhaps to occupy only Thirparappu in their holiday destinations!! We enjoyed standing under the falls and getting wet in the force of the water.

Thirparappu Waterfalls in KanyakumariMy aunt who lives here in Kanyakumari normally comes to the Thirparappu Mahadevar temple here. So I too went here with my friends. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva and this is one of the most important Shiva temples in the district of Kanyakumari. There is something so special about the temples in Tamil Nadu , be it their design or construction, the overall effect is mesmerizing. Kulasekaram lies around 5 kilometres from this temple. It is said that Lord Shiva lives here as Virabhadra which is a fierce form of this Indian God. Many inscriptions were found in the temple which indicate the events that have taken here centuries back. There are also descriptions of the events occurred during the rule of a Pandya king dating back to the 9th century. The entire temple sanctum has a circular base and a conical tower on the top.

Mahadevar templeThen we went boating here in the Thirparappu Waterfalls. This facility is available for all the tourists. There are pedal boats that can be rented at affordable rates . All tourists are allowed to pedal across the river here. This lovely experience has its own share of thrill and adventure and the entire scenery is stupendous and renders the tourist totally weak with the picturesque ambikence. It is a wonderful experience to sit on the boat and pedal across with dense greenery on both sides.

Originating from the River Kodayar the Thirparappu Waterfalls falls down around fifty feet on to the river bed below. The riverbed is around 300 foot long and has a rocky surface. These falls are located around 13 km from the nearby Pechiparai Dam.

Pechiparai DamThe waterfull has flows with great force for around seven months in the whole year. the rocky riverbed also has a dam – the Thirparappu Dam that runs for around one fourth kilometre in the same direction as the water current. Then the water from this dam is allowed to flow into the fields of paddy . This irrigation facitlity is extremely useful here and it is fascintating to see the process of irrigation from the dam to the fields.

Thirparappu means a pavilion of holy land and beauty. A very verdant and extremely wonderful spot this place is something that has to be seen to be believed. With the flow of the River Kodayar and the lovely green ambience here, the Thirparappu region is an area of extreme scenic beauty.

Thirparappu WaterfallsPeople in and around the place have a number of buses, taxis, autorickshaws for local transport. Tourists normally come here, andvisit the waterfalls and the temple and go back completely enlightened and happy.

With immensely beautiful surroundings to offer and exgtremely memorable travel pleasures to cherish, the Thirparappu Waterfalls in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu is certainly a must see spot here.
